ADVENTure Day 4 - Doing Evangelism
One of the Lightwave Community’s practices is “Doing Evangelism”. “Evangel” means “Good News” and “Doing” reminds us that this is an active thing. We don’t just talk about the good news of Jesus, we live it out – and it isn’t always easy.
“Endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry” 2 Timothy 4.5
When we “Do Evangelism” as part of a small group or community, everyone has a part to play. It may be serving up baked potatoes as in this picture from Bungay or organising a walk or helping with debt counselling – but together with others we are doing what makes the good news real and tangible. Jesus’ love poured out on the cross is made real as we love and sacrifice and forgive – but what this looks like, what we each do, is different for each person.
Sometimes people don’t like the word evangelism – they associate it with putting people under pressure to believe something or come to church. Doing evangelism should never be like that. Doing evangelism should spring from loving God and loving the person with whom you are sharing. We long for people to experience Jesus because he is absolutely the best thing that could ever happen to them. When we love people like that doing evangelism, wont be coercive but will offer practical love alongside choices and opportunities to find out more.
Lord Jesus, Doing Evangelism is a big challenge – Sometimes because I forget that it is a work of Love – and sometimes because I remember, but my love needs to grow. Grant me a Big Love to share your good news in all kinds of practical ways. Amen
