Lightwave ADVENTure 16 - P is for Pray

24 DAILY REFLECTIONS ON MISSION WITH THE LIGHTWAVE COMMUNITY

“Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads with all kinds of prayers and requests.  With this in mind, be alert and never give up praying for all the Lord’s people.  Pray also for me, that whenever I soeak, words may be given to me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.”

Ephesians 6.18-19

Prayer is hard work.  It is often invisible and we can be tempted to think it is an optional extra in our Christian activities – or something that just needs to be tagged on to the end of our meetings.  But prayer is the air we breathe.

The purpose of prayer is far more than asking for things.  We are to be like little children – who come to a parent with their needs and desires.  A parent is doing far more than providing answers to these requests.  There is the building of a relationship and intimacy in which the children grow in love and character.  But unlike, in earthly families we do not grow into independence, but into greater knowledge of our complete dependence on our heavenly Father.  Because of this, we are learning in Lightwave to make prayer more prominent in every aspect of our life as a community and to build in rhythms of attending to God.

Kathy Wilson who leads a Lightwave retreat ministry at “Place by the Water” and coordinates the movement “Suffolk in Prayer” describes prayer as having a secret “pocketful of power”.  This is because we can pray at any time and in any place and we can know that God Almighty, the Lord of Heaven and Earth, hears us and is with us.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the privilege of prayer.  May we rediscover again and again its purpose and its power.  Amen.
